Ruled by pharaohs in ancient times, the kingdom of Egypt was founded by King Menes in 3150 BC. It later on led the unified kingdom to a series of dynasties including that of the Ptolemies.

The Ptolemaic Kingdom made Alexandria as the capital of Egypt making the place the hub for Greek culture. Although the Ptolemies were of Greek descent, they assimilated themselves to the country’s culture and dressed as the pharaohs before them. The death of the dynasty was signaled by Cleopatra’s suicide with Marc Antony.
