As what you have most likely seen in the news, parts of Australia have been down, and under, bad weather this past month.

And at the recent Brickvention 2011, the town of Ararat, one of the flooded areas, had its special spot as a diorama depicting the scenery and life of the people way back in 1972.

Located on the south-west of Victoria, Australia, Ararat is a picturesque city surrounded by mountain ranges and fertile fields. The center of the Victorian gold rush, gold mining put Ararat on the map. Gold was said to have been discovered in the area in 1957. Ararat got its name from a Hill nearby that was coined by Horatio Wills, referring to the story of Noah’s Ark in the Bible.

The Ararat Diorama in the recent Brickvention 2011 features what could be a common scene in the area back in 1972. Typical to a mining community, railroad tracks were in place and establishments lined the roadside. Complete with electrical posts, vehicles in the road, and a noteworthy white shed, the Ararat Diorama is just oozing with details.

Tim Gould and Mike Pianta, the creators planned for the diorama to keep the legacy of the town as visible as possible, while working on separate sections of the said piece. It wasn’t the easiest task, they mentioned, but neither was it impossible. Gould, who lives in Brisbane, had to make his half of the project in small sections to make it easier to travel. However, the biggest hurdle they had to go through was the weather. Days prior to Gould’s flight to Melbourne for the Brickvention, Brisbane was flooded.

To cut the long story short, he got to the convention and his half of the diorama joined it’s other portion in the Brickvention. How he and his build got there, is another tale of its own.
