Anne Boleyn’s ghost still haunts the Tower of London or so witnesses say.
Anne Boleyn is known as Henry Vlll’s second wife and the very reason why the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon was annulled. Although Anne succeeded in becoming the Queen of England, she was beheaded just days before Henry married his third wife Jane Seymour. Her death made her an important figure in the religious and political upheaval in Britain though and was also instituted as a martyr for the reformation.
Anne was educated in the Netherlands and in France. She was the maid of honour to the Queen of France but returned to England in 1522 to marry James Butler, her cousin and the 9th Earl of Ormond. The plan for marriage did not push through of course since Anne was invited to be the maid of honour to Catherine of Aragon.
It was in 1525 when Henry VIII became rather enamoured with Anne Boleyn and began pursuing her. She resisted Henry VIII because she did not want to become one of the mistresses of the King. According to scholars, Anne not giving in is the main reason why Henry VIII wanted out in his marriage. By 1533, Henry and Anne were married and Anne became queen. She gave birth to a baby girl –the future Elizabeth I but never produced a son. A few miscarriages later, Henry finally gave up and already had his eyes on Jane Seymour.
After three years of being Queen of England, Anne Boleyn’s happy days were over and by April 1536, the Queen was investigated for high treason. She was found guilty by her peers and was beheaded on the 19th of May 1536.
Although Anne Boleyn may have been considered as a witch during her reign as Queen, she is still the most influential Queen Consort that the English ever had.
