St. Lego City’s Fire Department

August 3rd, 2010

Ever heard of the city of St. Lego? This city is an old Lego city that has all the basic services its Lego citizens need. The City of St. Lego Fire and Rescue Service was established as early as 1874 to protect not only St. Lego citizens but their properties as well. According to their official website, the St. Lego Fire & Rescue Service has 1210 active officers, support personnel and firefighters that protect the whole of St. Lego. In fact, according to the website, they are one of the most equipped and modern firefighting facility in the history of the little coloured bricks.

Fire suppression and prevention are the main thrusts of the firefighting department. They also have a forestry division, a marine division, air wing, emergency medical services, beach patrol, and a fire academy that trains would-be firefighters.

Squad 11 is one of the first squads under the said department. They have a powerful fire truck with a 2008 Pierce Saber, 1250 GPM pump and a 750 gal tank. This rather sophisticated piece of brick is one of the best equipment that the department has.

Station Two was constructed in 1934 and today boasts 3 bays with sleeping quarters for firefighters in the inside. The said station has 4 vehicles commissioned to its name and this includes Engine Two, Car Two, Rescue Two and Tactical Rescue Two. Station Two is located at the North End of St. Lego City.

Built in the year 1929, Station Three is located in Union Square, the busiest part of town. The station is made up of 3 stories and a 4 story tower to its side.

Being one of the busiest fire stations in the area, Station Three is equipped with all the necessary vehicles and support that it needs.

There are other stations in the area and we at the Little Coloured Bricks think that this fire department is so vast that it will make the Lego enthusiast dizzy in happiness.

Truck, Truck Away

August 2nd, 2010

The trucking industry is a lucrative business and it does not really hurt if you expose your children to trucking and to trucks at an early age because trucks are fun. Apart from that, Lego trucks are also very educational.

A truck or a lorry is the king of the road. Trucks transport cargo on land and are very important elements for different businesses. Varying in size, trucks range from mid-sized to mammoth-like vehicles. The smallest of them are like your regular automobiles while the commercial ones are large and powerful.

Although Lego trucks do not need gasoline, real trucks are powered by gas and consume a lot of it just to make a delivery.

According to experts, the word truck was derived from the Greek term “Trochos”. When directly translated, the word means wheels. The word has evolved has evolved through the years though because in the US, the word truck is usually used for vehicles a bit larger than cars and for pickup trucks or other vehicles that have load beds. In the UK and in Ireland, the term lorry is more accepted when talking about a cargo truck.

There are many kinds of trucks and some of them are not used for business purposes. This includes the fire truck used by fire departments all over the world. Tanker trucks on the other hand are only used for the transport for chemicals, gasoline and other materials that may be toxic. These chemicals can either be in liquid or gas form. Some trucks such as the tanker are also called HGVs or Heavy Goods Vehicles. HGVs also carry large equipment from one point to another.

Trucks are also used to carry different kinds of goods. It could be perishable goods or soft drinks (soda) like the truck on the picture below:

52 Years Of Lego

July 30th, 2010

When Lego turned 50 in the year 2008, many Lego enthusiasts and those whose lives have changed because of the little coloured bricks celebrated the existence of the world’s greatest toy. Although some people may disagree with the “greatest toy” comment, many would attest to Lego’s greatness for improving learning, imagination, critical thinking and playtime.

We have said this a thousand times and we will say this again -you can make anything out of Legos and this includes planes, dogs, houses, trees, what have you. From what we have seen through the years, you can make a Ferrari race car out of Lego, even a Volvo if you want to. The great thing about the bricks is that they are so rudimentary that you can actually think out of the box and build anything. it could be something useful like a pencil case or a wine holder or it could be something fancy like a castle or one whole Lego town.

Some people think that you need to have a background of the bricks before you can actually play with them but it does not necessarily mean that those who did not grow up with them cannot play with Legos.

Sir Paul Smith said in an interview with independent.co.uk  ”I didn’t play with Lego as a child, but my wife’s grandchildren love it. The hardest thing is understanding the structure of it. Once you’ve got the hang of that, it’s fantastic. The interesting thing about children is that you can buy them the most amazing toy and they’ll play with a shoebox. The thing with Lego is that it’s really basic and from it you can make things that are amazing. You can do a tower – or you can do a rabbit.”

Much like Sir Paul Smith, many grandparents and parents love the coloured bricks because they are very versatile.
